Application: M5BF Vane Motor


     Parker’s M5BF-018 hydraulic vane motor fit this application to a tee. Imagine a very small (less than a 7” cube), very quiet (less than 80 dB) motor spinning at 6,000 RPM! This is what the customer demanded for testing the centrifugal integrity of the grinding wheels he manufactures. With this motor’s high load capacity, the wheel to be tested can be mounted directly onto its double ball bearing supported, tapered output shaft. The cam ring in this motor is balanced diametrically, with two pressure inlets and two outlets opposing each other, making for a very smooth operation. The uni-directional version of the motor was used, which incorporates a cross port check valve. In this simple configuration, the load can free wheel and / or overrun the oil supply without a risk of the motor cavitating and being damaged. The M5BF-018 is a 1.1 cubic inches per revolution motor; so, at 6,000 RPM uses just 30 gallons per minute. The motors specific torque is 0.175 in-lb per psi; so, at 3000 PSI difference in pressure, the motor produces 525 in-lb of torque for acceleration. In this application, the tiny motor is producing 50 horsepower.
